History of Elite Painters™ Art Exhibitions

Platform to propel Asian artistic development and appreciation

The “Elite Painters™” Art Exhibitions, inaugurated in Year 2000, is organised by Eagle’s Eye  Art  Gallery and Eagle’s Dream, two well-established art galleries in Singapore. The galleries have developed this exhibition into a prestigious annual affair for art lovers to view the latest works by Asia’s crème de la crème of art. As the title suggests, only the “elite” artists – artists with reputable background – will be selected to participate in this exhibition.

In the past ten years, Eagle’s Eye  Art  Gallery and Eagle’s Dream have developed the brand name of “Elite Painters™” to raise the profile of selected local and Asian elite painters. This branding is a strategic marketing tool to promote our local artists, whilst qualifying only the choicest artists for this title. For this project, all activities ranging from scholastic research, art curatorship, product development and art discourse are being systematically developed under the “Elite Painters™” branding.

The objective of “Elite Painters™” Art Exhibitions is to create awareness and appreciation for high calibre artists in Singapore, and in the long run to become a benchmark for up and coming artists to strive to participate as one of the elite painters. “Elite Painters™” will include the finest from all over Asia. With each year, Eagle's Eye  Art  Gallery and Eagle's Dream hope to present not only the renowned artists, but to discover new artistic geniuses that will help bring art appreciation to new levels.

ELITE PAINTERS 2009, 1 Aug - 4 Oct The exhibition hopes to tell a story about the livelihood of the people in Singapore since the 1950s, how they are driven exclusively by the need to survive. Elite painters Koeh Sia Yong, Lai Kui Fang, Wan Soon Kam, Chua Mia Tee, Choo Keng Kwang, Tan Choh Tee, Fan Shao Hua, Lee Boon Wang, Lui Cheng Thak and Andrew Yeo show us the different ways people eke out a living. For those who were born earlier, these images evoke indentification and trigger nostalgia. For those who were born later, they have the privilege to catch a glimpse of the past through the eyes of our Elite Painters. This exhibition is also dedicated to children. When they are old enough to understand these paintings one day, will see that the paintings were painted for them too, in the hope and belief that they and their offspring will live in a better world, and that what happened to their grandparents and parents will never happen again. The struggles, toil and perspiration of the early immigrants brought about the wealth of Singapore. In the words of our first President Yusof Ishak,"the immigrants were not locusts who had their fill and left a desert behind. They found a barren desert and left behind a throbbing, dynamic and prosperous city. The art works at the exhibition would provide a powerful testimony to the trials and triumphs of the tenacious human spirit.

ELITE PAINTERS 2008, 18 Oct - 31 Oct “It was the worst of times, it was the best of times” - This seemingly contradictory and ambivalent proclamation probably characterised best the selected artists and their works for this fine art exhibition. The manifestation of the human spirit is most acute under the harshest and trying social circumstances. Most heroes are human beings endowed not with supernatural abilities but the will and determination to rise above doing the ordinary. These are the qualities that we can all learn and seek to emulate. These are the qualities that we can nurture and encourage in our young. It is precisely because these qualities can be emulated that we regard life-changing ordeals and tribulations monumental to the psychological and social development of people. Elite Painters™ 2008: History of the Human Spirit illuminates moments of brilliance that are comforting and inspiring to see.

18 Aug - 30 Oct 2007 - A Commemorative Event to Mark on Your Calendar. Come August 2007, Eagle's Dream Art Gallery will be exhibiting some paintings of late artist, Tay Bak Koi. This particular series of works from Tay Bak Koi's personal collection has not been viewed by the public before and promises to be an eye opener and will build towards a meaningful collection for collectors and fans alike. Collectors and supporters can expect to be treated to a galore of works, a short slide show and even paraphemalia which will be on sale on the launch of this event to commemorate his achievements as the purveyor of fine arts. 'Reminiscences of Tay Bak Koi' is a series of paintings culminated from Bak Koi's forty years of art practice. It showcases the ethereal quality of his paintings and is mesmerizing because of the efforts honed to develop his expressions in different styles and cultural settings. Bak Koi chose to keep some of his works for his own collection because they represented his milestones in his artistic works. Much of Bak Koi's paintings emanate from memories, an emancipation that serves much poetic justice today even though he has retreated to the netherworld. He fuses reality and imagination in ground works that has long lasting impressions. The iridescent, candy colours of Bak Koi's paintings often accompanied the rustic coffee shops, putrid wet markets and exudes an old-world charm that is timeless in appeal. The former landscape of his depictions is surreal in their unassuming manners withour imposing a stately arrogance for orderliness in the post-colonial days of Singapore. 'Reminiscences' provided the sustenance towards the masterpieces created throughout Bak Koi's lifetime and promises another close encounter with the evergreen artist.

ELITE PAINTERS 2007,28 Apr-28 Jun This group exhibition gathers works by thirteen local contemporary artists who bring abstraction to the edge of representation. In a typical life of an urban dweller today, the hustle and bustle of daily routines have drained us off many of the fundamentals of Life itself. Realizing our inate desire to put a pause to the motions, David J Lim, Lois Lee, Lawrence Tio, Arnewaty, Mutmainnah Saidi, Tan Seow Wei, Lim Shengen, Jane Lee, Sufian B. Hamri, Safarudin B. Abdul Hamid and Philippa Killen. Let us take a step back and remind ourselves to reevaluate our intricate relationship with nature, people and our past. Through the play of form, space and displacement of daily objects, the works lend us the opportunity to relook at the life we are living, through these magical kaleidoscopes that frames the minds of these new promising talents. To spread THE joy of our new gallery opening, a charity auction will be organized, where all proceeds will go to our chosen charity Riding of the Disabled Association. After thirteen years of bringing quality works to the local audience, Eagle’s Eye Art Gallery injects a new breath of life into our extensive collection through the launch of Eagle’s Dream Contemporary Works. Life of an urban dweller in a cosmopolitan state like Singapore has brought about a myriad of changes to the way we think, breathe and act. Art, as a tool for expression has also taken on a new dimension, through Contemporary Art. In an age where the term “ceteris paribus” holds no ground, Eagle’s Dream Contemporary Works guided by the gallery’s philosophy of “Loving art for art’s sake” brings to us the modern definitions of the life we love, through art - the love of our life.

ELITE PAINTER 2006, 7 Oct - 30 Nov Art Talk - A Peek into the Kampong World : 7 Oct 2006, 3pm by Joy Loh, Eagle's Eye Art Gallery. Michael Tan continues to lead in the field of Singapore Art, with successful record sales in the year ended 2005. By popular demand, Eagle’s Eye Art Gallery is organizing a tea session with one of the most promising painter in Southeast Asia. Art collectors are captivated by Michael’s paintings which are richly detailed and gloriously coloured, with most of the themes set in the realm of rusticity. He scrutinizes his subjects with the eye of a microbiologist, then gives a glittering brocade-like quality to the minutiae of kampong life. Drawn with cheerful spontaneity that parallels the happy cheer of kampong folks, Michael’s paintings speak to us of family and tradition, warmth and vibrancy, harmony and contentment. Ms Joy Loh, Art Director of Eagle’s Eye Art Gallery and the Exhibition Curator, commented, “Michael Tan is our upcoming most promising Elite Painter. Art buyers have shown discerning taste, recognizing the quality of works offered at our gallery. The market is continuing to show a strong interest in Michael’s paintings. This artist will be a phenomenal success.”

Elite Painters 2005, 8 Jul - 30 Aug Featuring paintings by Tay Bak Koi, Choy Moo Kheong, Michael Tan, Choo Keng Kwang and other Elite Painters™, this exhibition is for those who love the simple and natural found in kampong life, wooded streams, lush forests and meadows of gold. The paintings illustrate the domestic routines of Asians pitted against colourful surreal settings. The vibrant colours represent the richness of Asian life imbued with the values of love, harmony and spirit of togetherness. “The Elite Painters 2005” aspires to recapture these values that are increasingly eroded in modern urban life.
