"History of The Human Spirit - Survival Through The Ages" is an art exhibition that will bring together the works of our homegrown reknown painters. These painters have been painting continuously since the 1950s. It has been an exciting time for our art curators in extracting from the wealth of adventures, observations and experiences of elite painters Koeh Sia Yong, Lai Kui Fang, Wan Soon Kam, Chua Mia Tee, Choo Keng Kwang, Tan Choh Tee, Fan Shao Hua, Lee Boon Wang, Lui Cheng Thak and Andrew Yeo. Highlights of this exciting opening event include Art Talks which will spin a compelling tale of social history recounting the hard work and strength that reflects the resilience of the Asian Identity.
The exhibition hopes to tell a story about the livelihood of the people in Singapore since the 1950s, how they are driven exclusively by the need to survive. The artists show us the different ways people eke out a living. For those who were born earlier, these images evoke indentification and trigger nostalgia. For those who were born later, they have the privilege to catch a glimpse of the past through the eyes of our Elite Painters.
This exhibition is also dedicated to children. When they are old enough to understand these paintings one day, will see that the paintings were painted for them too, in the hope and belief that they and their offspring will live in a better world, and that what happened to their grandparents and parents will never happen again. The struggles, toil and perspiration of the early immigrants brought about the wealth of Singapore . In the words of our first President Yusof Ishak, "the immigrants were not locusts who had their fill and left a desert behind. They found a barren desert and left behind a throbbing, dynamic and prosperous city.
The art works at the exhibition would provide a powerful testimony to the trials and triumphs of the tenacious human spirit
